CommonSpirit Health is pleased to offer an ASHP accredited PGY2 Pharmacy Residency Program in Critical Care at St. Anthony Hospital.

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency - Critical Care pharmacy specialist

PGY2 Pharmacy Residency - Critical Care

Function as an independent clinical pharmacy specialist

PGY2 specialty residents will have a well-rounded experience in caring for critically ill medical, surgical, cardiovascular, neuroscience, and trauma patient populations. Program graduates will possess the skills needed to function as an independent clinical pharmacy specialist and integral member of the critical care team.

The Critical Care Residency at CommonSpirit Health St. Anthony Hospital is designed to develop pharmacists into specialists in critical care with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to function as independent practitioners in a variety of critical care settings.

An interview is required to bring on residents for 12 months in the PGY2 Critical Care Specialty Residency. Refer to the ASHP residency directory for the application deadline.

Application information

Application information

Applicants must be a PharmD graduate of an ACPE accredited college of pharmacy, eligible for licensure in Colorado, and completed or in the process of completing a PGY1 Pharmacy Residency program that is ASHP accredited, or in the process of accreditation (i.e. candidate or preliminary accreditation status). Visit the ASHP Residency Directory for annual residency application deadlines. All materials must be received by the application deadline. Applications should be submitted electronically through the Pharmacy Online Residency Centralized Application Service (PhORCAS).

Necessary application materials include:

  • Letter of intent (maximum of 2 pages) describing why you have decided to pursue a critical care pharmacy residency and how a critical care residency will aid in your career goals.
  • Curriculum Vitae.
  • Three letters of reference using the PhORCAS Standardized Reference Template. We request a minimum of one (two is preferred) of your three references should come from a preceptor who you have worked with in a clinical setting, related to a PGY-1 rotation. The clinical preceptor should be able to comment on your scope of responsibility, total patient load, level of autonomy, clinical abilities, and organizational and time management skills. All three reference writers should use the standard PhORCAS template to submit their candidate recommendation.

A virtual or on-site interview is required to be included on the candidate rank list for this program.

Appointments of applicants to residency positions may be contingent upon the applicants satisfying certain eligibility requirements (e.g., obtaining pharmacist license in Colorado by September 30th of the incoming year, and successful completion of a pre-employment physical and drug screen and successful obtainment of PGY1 certificate).

Major project

Major project

Each resident is required to complete an original research project and prepare a manuscript for publication. Residents are encouraged to choose a topic of interest that will contribute to the advancement of pharmacy practice for CommonSpirit Health / St Anthony Hospital. Projects are presented local, regional, and national conferences including the Mountain States Pharmacy Residency Conference. Additionally, residents are expected to complete a drug-use evaluation and present the results internally for process improvement purposes.

A longitudinal CommonSpirit Health / St Anthony Hospital pharmacy research program is required for residents to complete. The research program results in a certificate if the resident fully completes all the program criteria by the end of the residency year. An optional certificate program for guidance in research design and conduct is offered to residents through the University of Colorado School Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences.

Why choose our program?

PGY2 residencies provide residents with opportunities to function independently as practitioners by conceptualizing and integrating accumulated experience and knowledge incorporating both into the provision of patient care that improves medication therapy. Residents who successfully complete an accredited PGY2 pharmacy residency should possess competencies that qualify them for clinical pharmacist and/or faculty positions and position them to be eligible for attainment of board certification in that practice area (when board certification for the practice area exists).
