Lympedema management

If lymphedema is not treated correctly, it can change from a relatively mild problem into a far more serious one. The rehabilitation department at St. Catherine Hospital offers Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT).

Therapy components consist of manual lymph drainage; compression bandaging; skin care; remedial exercises; and compression garments. Goals of therapy include early intervention and risk reduction.

  • Education for skin and hygiene care
  • Manual lymph drainage
  • Compression, bandaging and remedial exercises
  • CPT results in volume reduction, infection avoidance and control
  • Fibrosis management
  • Cosmetic, functional and psychological improvement and enhanced quality of life
  • Patients can enjoy productive lives with little or no lifestyle restrictions

Breast Cancer patients, Lymphedema patients, Phelbo-lymphostatic edema, Post surgical/post traumatic edema, Lipo-lymphedema, Lymphostatic encephalopathy, Complex regional pain syndrome, Dependent edema, Systematic diseases causing edema.

Lymphedema is referred to as a chronic disease or condition. Patients can be seen acutely after mastectomy. And, though the future holds great promise for an eventual cure, current therapeutic approaches remain focused on disease control, limb volume reduction, and improved physical and psychosocial function.
