What does an America’s 50 Best Hospitals mean for patients?

America’s Best Award recipients have demonstrated the ability to have better than expected outcomes across many different procedures and conditions and repeated that performance year after year. Patients looking to understand their options and choices for care should they need unexpected or planned hospital care can have confidence that these hospitals have a demonstrated track record for quality outcomes.

Specifically, over 2011-2013, these hospitals as a group, had an overall 25% lower mortality risk for 19 procedures and conditions when compared to all other hospitals.

If all hospitals in the nation had performed at the level of this group on average, 172,626 lives could have been potentially saved

How were hospitals determined as an America’s Best Hospital?

Healthgrades America’s Best Hospitals Award™ recognizes the top 50 and 100 hospitals for consistent clinical excellence by identifying those that received a Healthgrades Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence™ for 2015 which is based on MedPAR data spanning 2011 – 2013. Then we identify those who have achieved that designation for the most consecutive years in which the award was available.

To identify America’s Best Hospitals™, Healthgrades uses the following process:

    1. Hospitals that received the Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence for at least seven consecutive years are identified.
    2. If the number of hospitals identified above was less than 50, then the recipients for the last six consecutive years were identified and sorted by average z-score from the most recent Distinguished Hospital Award for Clinical Excellence analysis. The average z-score is a statistical measure of hospital quality outcomes. The top hospitals from this list were then added to the list from step 1 above to create a list of America’s 50 Best Hospitals for 2015. These hospitals are recognized as the top 1% in the nation for consistent clinical quality.
    3. America’s 100 Best Hospitals are determined by combining America’s 50 Best Hospitals with the next 50 top hospitals on the list of Distinguished Hospitals for Clinical Excellence. These hospitals are recognized as the top 2% in the nation for consistent clinical quality.

How does Healthgrades determine hospital quality?

Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance for over 4,500 hospitals across the nation in 36 procedures and conditions annually. Healthgrades.com provides information on objective measures of hospital performance, which allows consumers to compare their local hospitals online at www.Healthgrades.com. Healthgrades evaluates hospital performance for nearly every hospital in the nation; no hospital can opt-in or opt-out of being evaluated, and no hospital pays to be evaluated. Mortality and complication rates are risk adjusted, which takes into account differing levels of severity of patient illness at different hospitals and allows for hospitals to be compared equally.

  • Magnet

MagnetPenrose-St. Francis Health Services is proud to be a Magnet-recognized organization, as the credential reinforces our dedication to quality patient care. Magnet-recognized organizations consistently demonstrate:

    • Higher patient satisfaction with nurse communication, availability of help, and receipt of discharge information;
    • Lower risk of 30-day mortality and lower failure to rescue; and
    • Lower rates of falls.

We are dedicated to providing our patients with the highest-quality care, and this credential is confirmation of our success in this endeavor.

    Magnet Designation

Penrose-St. Francis Health Services has joined a prestigious list of healthcare organizations that have been recognized as part of the American Nurses Credentialing Center's (ANCC) Magnet Recognition Program®, which recognizes superior quality in nursing care. ANCC conducts thorough evaluations of hospitals seeking recognition, judging proficiency and leadership in the following five key areas that are considered global issues in nursing and healthcare:

    1. Visionary leadership transforming the organization to meet changing needs
    2. Empowered staff properly prepared to face all challenges
    3. Competent, dedicated, and skilled nurses
    4. Continued innovation within staff knowledge, clinical practice, and systemic improvements
    5. Outcomes measurement systems in place throughout the entire organization

To achieve Magnet recognition, organizations must pass a rigorous and lengthy process that demands widespread participation from leadership and staff. The process begins with the submission of an electronic application, followed by written documentation demonstrating qualitative and quantitative evidence regarding patient care and outcomes. If scores from the written documentation fall within a range of excellence, an on-site visit will occur to thoroughly assess the applicant. After this rigorous on-site review process, the Commission on Magnet will review the completed appraisal report and vote to determine whether Magnet recognition will be granted. Currently, only 378 out of nearly 6,000 U.S. healthcare organizations have achieved Magnet recognition.

Note: Visit ANCC website for the current number of Magnet-recognized organizations, as it changes frequently.

Visit the Magnet Recognition Program® website for more information about the program® and current statistics.
